Our Story - The Natural Bedding Company

Handcrafted in Australia using only the finest natural and organic materials, The Natural Bedding Company creates bespoke mattresses, hardwood furniture, and luxury bedding. Rigorously researched, consciously designed and meticulously made to order — for unparalleled support and deep, restorative sleep.

Our story begins in 1984 when Andrew McCaig, drawing upon age-old Japanese futon-making traditions, hand-stitched his first cotton shikibuton. This humble mattress marked the start of his lifelong mission: to help improve people’s sleep. In the years that followed, Andrew continued to hone his craft, refining his focus from futons to Organic Latex mattresses and fine-tuning the expertise he would pass on to the next generation.

Central to his philosophy was the desire to deliver a purely natural product; mattresses that were not only sustainably handcrafted to stand the test of time but in most cases, catered to the needs of those navigating health challenges.

Four decades later, The Natural Bedding Company has become synonymous with bespoke craftsmanship, environmental stewardship, and a strict non-toxic ethos. The range has grown to include bed frames, bedside tables, pillows, quilts, and linen bedding — all held to the exceedingly high standards for which we are renowned. “We’ve certainly come a long way from delivering orders by bicycle,” laughs Andrew. “But our commitment to people and the planet has never wavered. More than a purchase, our products are an investment; in sleep health, excellence, and the spirit of local manufacturing.”

Crafting our signature products — Organic Latex mattresses and Tasmanian Oak furniture — begins, as it has always done, in our Sydney workshop. Each piece is made to order, requiring many hours of workmanship. Every step is completed by hand — artisanal processes from needle tufting mattresses to polishing the native timber of our bed frames — honouring the exceptional craftsmanship that Andrew built his dream upon.

In an era where the speed of production is increasingly prioritised over quality, our ongoing respect for these time-honoured skills sets us apart, as does our belief that products should be made with integrity, transparency and only the finest natural and organic materials — for optimal impact on your sleep and minimal impact on our planet.

“Sleep is the ultimate everyday luxury, and it’s hugely rewarding to help people create their dream bedroom sanctuary,” says Shani Kimmins, COO and Andrew’s daughter. “From our much-loved mattresses to elegant bedside tables, made by hand at our Sydney workshop, we take tremendous pride in knowing we are creating something special just for you. Each stitch and seam is symbolic of the craftsmanship at the heart of our brand.”

OUR PROMISE

It’s important to us to be totally transparent about our products – if we can’t answer all your questions about a material, we won’t use it. All the materials we use are natural and sustainable – and, in most cases, suitable for anyone with health issues – and we do everything we can to make sure that workers involved in the process are treated fairly and ethically.

Maybe it’s enough for you to know that when you buy a bed from Natural Bedding Company, you’re getting a bed made from all-natural materials and the latex is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and dust mite-resistant, and it won’t contain any nasty chemicals. And that the bed you’re buying will be specially made for you in Sydney, and give you the best night’s sleep you’ve had for years. If that’s the case, you probably need to read no further.

If, on the other hand, you want to know about VOCs, how our latex is processed, latex fillers and other interesting things, you’ve come to the right place.

Handcrafted in our Sydney workshop, every Organic Latex mattress from The Natural Bedding Company uses only the finest natural, sustainable materials. Our Organic Latex is free of any harmful toxins and is naturally antibacterial, anti-fungal and dust mite-resistant.

These are all natural mattresses, with no treatments added, and so it is important to follow the care instructions, checking for moisture on the underside regularly, and flipping the mattress if you feel any dampness. An open aired base, such as slats, can be helpful to assist airflow.
